More On This Desert Oasis

Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California. It is located approximately 85 miles east of Los Angeles, 115 miles north of San Diego, and 275 miles south-east of Las Vegas. It sits on the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert in Coachella valley.

The city is a popular tourist destination with an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21°C). Besides its warm winter climate, the city also offers clubs, live music venues and star sightings. It has a rich history and the architecture to prove it.

Palm Springs’ year-round warm climate and copious sunshine make it an attractive tourist destination. It hosts the Palm Springs International Film Festival, often referred to as “The Film Fest” in local media.

The festival has grown from a small gathering for local filmmakers and celebrity guests to an internationally attended event with over 100 feature films, shorts, and stage events shown during its week-long run each November.

Every November the city hosts a large Downtown Palm Springs Art Festival in which artists from all over the country display and sell their works.

During Easter weekend there is a large celebrity-filled convention, held at the convention center just south of downtown Palm Springs. The major search engines sponsor this event as well as local charitable institutions such as San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital’s Methodist Campus and Desert Hospital.

Major conventions also take place during late October on property owned by Indian Wells Resorts & Spa. Although these events are primarily geared towards business executives, they garner a lot of media attention.

Palm Springs Weather

The desert town of Palm Springs has an arid climate with an average high temperature during the summer of 86 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) and an average low temperature in December of 44 degrees F (7 C). The highest recorded temperature was 122 F in September 2005.

Relative humidity varies between 10 percent in January to 61 percent in July, when it is often cloudy. Sunny skies prevail on a yearly basis despite some rainstorms each winter and early spring.

Summer monsoon rains produce thunderstorms that typically occur from mid-July through August. Afternoon thundershowers are common throughout the year with over twenty days of measurable precipitation annually, mostly rainfall from May through October. Overcast conditions occur only about 5 percent of the time.

The average annual rainfall is only 8 inches (20 centimeters), most of which falls from mid-November through April. Snow occurs infrequently in the local mountains, and accumulations are usually less than 2 inches (5 centimeters).

Temperatures drop rapidly at night, with freezing temperatures common in December and January. Wintertime highs often reach into the 70s F (21 C) during a typical rainy day, while nighttime lows often stay well below freezing.

These “bluebird” days when there is no precipitation may occur more frequently in other parts of southern California, but effective precipitation in the form of rain is more likely to occur at lower elevations.
